Argentina Government Evaluates Closing Housing Secretariat

The national government is considering closing the Secretariat of Territorial Development and Habitat, which would leave more than 500 workers unemployed and affect financing programs for access to housing in Argentina. This announcement has generated concern among employees and the community in general, as numerous construction projects in different provinces of the country would be halted.

Alejandra Basso, general secretary of the Delegates Board of the Secretariat, expressed her dismay at this measure, stating that "They are closing the Secretariat with 500 workers inside." According to the workers, the closure is expected to take effect at the end of February, which would result in the elimination of key housing policies and the loss of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the construction sector.

Basso emphasized that the halt of works would affect a large number of homes, both those under construction and those with international financing, totaling more than 124,000 homes and putting a state investment of 3 billion dollars at risk. In light of this situation, workers have called for a day of protest in defense of their jobs and the public policies threatened by the closure of the Secretariat.

The mobilization to protest against this measure took place at the Secretariat's headquarters in the City of Buenos Aires. Employees express their concern for the future of housing programs and the job uncertainty they face.
